Summer monsoon storm moving across the desert. I tried to capture the imminent fury of the storm as it moves across the desert landscape.
Even though the Arizona desert only gets an average of eight inches of rain each year, when the summer monsoon storms come blowing in, they come in fiercely. Walls of dust can precede the torrential rain. Watching these storms roll across the desert is a grand sight. Horrendous downdrafts called microbursts can cause damage similar to that of a tornado. In the summer of 2019 one such storm blew several rail cars off the train tracks north of Tucson. Dropping inches of rain in a short period of time, these storms cause the dry washes in the desert to run rampantly as raging rivers dislodging debris and causing flooding on the desert floor and urban streets.
