About the Artist – David Scott Taylor

Meet the artist: David Scott Taylor.

Born an artist. In 1958, David Scott Taylor was born in the heartland of the United States; Decatur, Illinois. As soon as he understood that a pencil, crayon, paintbrush or even his fingers could make marks on things, he was fascinated to try to make images with them of what he saw in his surroundings and in his mind. The mind of a young artist connected with his eye and the lifelong journey of creative thought and visualization began. Having a father who dabbled in art helped foster his early understanding of how to draw. His mother, who put everything he drew for her on the refrigerator, helped young Taylor revel in his ability to create images and the reactions from those who viewed them.

All through his elementary and secondary education study of the fine arts enthralled him. But the practice of drawing and painting was his greatest pleasure. Not particularly adept at sports, he strove to excel at his art. Intrigue and interest in art soon turned to passion as he got older and more refined in his skill and understanding of the communication element of visual art. The process of creating art fascinates him still.

In his mid-twenties, Taylor sought to make his creative visual passion a career. He attended a commercial art and graphics design school after a stint in community college as a fine art major. This led him to a career in printing and publishing that honed his skills as an illustrator, graphics designer, art director, visual communicator, and copywriter as well as in sales and marketing. Throughout his commercial career he continued to create fine art pieces and does still.

Taylor believes that art is the window into the soul of the artist. “My paintings and drawings can be the result of dealing with an issue I may be having or a statement I want to make, or just something cool that I see in nature or in my mind,” he says. “Our eyes are the common communication denominator in humans. We may not speak the same language, so we can’t always verbalize with some, but we all see the same things visually. The beauty of this is the possibility of connecting and communicating with someone that you otherwise may not have been able to. And with fine art there is the element of pleasure or contemplation that you can offer the viewer that you are connecting with as an artist.”

David Scott Taylor has resided in the great American Southwest in Phoenix, Arizona since 1979. The light and colors as well as the topography, flora and fauna, and human culture of this region of the country are particularly impressive to him and are reflected in his paintings. “I have been in Arizona for over four decades and the sunrises and particularly the sunsets still awe me with the same sense of wonder they did when I saw my very first one,” he says. You will notice Taylor paints a lot of sunsets.
