Cactus In The Clouds

Prickly pear paddle cactus is a favorite subject in my work.

The prickly pear cactus is found throughout the southwest. It has multiple paddle colors; unbelievably brilliant floral colors and its fruit makes great jelly and margaritas. The paddles are edible and a great addition to salads. They can be found in the local farmers markets and grocery stores. The prickly pear cactus grow quickly and the paddles can sprout and stack up to over 6 feet tall. From my artist’s perspective the shapes and shadows make for the most intriguing of compositions for such a grouping of a basic oval shape. I can use them as surrealistic elements as well as a traditional landscape subject.
